University of Birmingham Library
The unique building façade of Birmingham University Library required a balance needed to utilise natural light but avoid overheating from solar gain. Active solar shading was integrated to control internal temperature levels, regulating interior conditions, and creating a dynamic face to the building that changes at different times of day.
A KNX central control with SMI actuators control external slat shutter blinds with mechanical motors, external roof atria shades with digital SMI motors and a range of internal shading products with mechanical and SMI motors.
Students visiting the library benefit from advanced shading automation, controlling the amount of daylight entering the building with the reduced impact of UV light and glare.
